National Pride Month

LGBTQ Pride Month is commemorated each year in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots that lasted for six days in New York City. The uprising of Stonewall Inn bar patrons and neighborhood residents was in response to ongoing police harassment of gay, lesbian and transgender individuals at the club located in Greenwich Village. The riots were a catalyst for increased visibility and activism of the LGBT community. The most iconic symbol seen at events such as the Pride parade is a rainbow flag, which typically symbolizes social equality, individuality, and support. A recent variant of the flag includes eight colors, each color representing a different meaning: black (diversity), brown (inclusivity), red (life), orange (healing), yellow (sunlight), green (nature), blue (harmony), and purple (spirit.)

• Visibility in the workplace plays a crucial role in shaping the narrative that individuals can be successful and bring their authentic selves to work simultaneously. What opportunities do organizations have to do more around supporting LGTBQ+ communities?
• What can you personally do as an ally for individuals identifying as LGBTQ+?
